Having served a variety of functions, the Fleehart Building was purchased in 1983 by Jerrold Whitney and Clayton Pinkerton.
When Mr. Pinkerton died in 1993 (Mr, Whitney preceased him), he left the building for use as a museum. The Mello-Roos Community Facilities Act of 1982 (GC 53311) allows any county, city, special district, school district, or joint powers of authority to establish a “Community Facilities District” for the financing of public services or facilities. Amador County CFD No. 2006-1 was established to finance Fire Protection Services. Property owners in the District are responsible for payment of an annual “special tax” which is used to provide a funding source for the additional cost of services. This special tax is included on the county tax bill.
The museum features changing exhibits bi-annually. Some of these exhibits are about Western women and their contributions to the Mother Lode.
The Amador Whitney Museum is open Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
